When you think of lavender, essential oils are probably the first thing that come to mind. This popular spa scent provides a natural sense of calm to those in the presence of its potent aroma, whether on spa days or romantic holidays, like Valentine’s Day. While the use of lavender dates back over 2500 years, it is still very much relevant today.
The History of Lavender: Then & Now
Lavender, derived from the Latin verb “lavare” — which means “to wash,” is an herb native to the mountainous region of the Mediterranean and in northern Africa. It’s a flowering plant that comes from the mint family. It’s characterized by its gentle purple hues and potent floral scent. The historical use of lavender spans back to ancient Egypt when Egyptians would use this herb for fragrance, as well as for the mummification process. Lavender was also an essential ingredient used by the Romans for cooking, bathing, and again, fragrance.
For years after, the use of lavender continued to spread across the globe and became popular among various communities. In addition to its attractive scent, the medicinal properties of lavender were also discovered. Today, lavender is used for both medicinal and therapeutic purposes, and is commercially grown because of its high-demand.
